Beginners’ Guide to Reading Financial Statements

This informative guide won’t train you to be an accountant, but it should give you the confidence to be able to look at a set of financial statements and make sense of them. By the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The three main financial statements which are in general put together quarterly and yearly:

  • Income Statement – shows income and expenses over a period of time
  • Balance Sheet – a snapshot at a single point in time showing the book value of assets, liabilities and shareholders’ equity
  • Cash Flow Statement – shows cash coming into the business in three areas – operations, financing and investing
